PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

[Taught Programme]

MA in Anthropology （One-year full-time/ Two-year part-time）

The programme is designed for people who have not majored in anthropology but wish to receive a formal education in the discipline. Students acquire systematic training in anthropological theory and methodology. (Three courses have been included in the list of reimbursable courses for the Continuing Education Fund (CEF)). 

Degree requirements can be completed in one year of full-time or two year of part-time study. The programme is taught, and no dissertation is required for graduation.

[Research Programmes]

MPhil/ PhD in Anthropology （Full-time）

In these programmes, students work closely with a supervisor in reading the literature and conducting research. This allows each student's studies to be tailored to his or her needs. Students are expected to be highly self-motivated in pursuing their anthropological education.

Here is some brief application information of the MPhil/PhD programmes of the Department of Anthropology at CUHK. For more details please visit the Department's homepage.

Programme

MPhil in Anthropology

It normally takes two years (full-time) to complete 28 units. Students must also pass a General Anthropology Examination based on a department reading list.

PhD in Anthropology

The programme is research-oriented. A student may be asked to take additional courses or tutorials, and will be required to present an annual written progress report to his/her supervisor. After passing Qualifying Exams, the student advances to PhD Candidate. Within six months of candidature, the PhD Candidate must submit a Research Proposal for a project requiring nine to twelve months of fieldwork. On return from fieldwork, the student will prepare a thesis based on fieldwork research.

Fields of Specialization

The Division focuses geographically on Chinese culture and society (especially South China) and on East and Southeast Asian Studies. Research topics include nationalism, ethnicity, religion, gender, development and social change, urban and youth cultures, heritage management, archaeology and museology.

Admission Requirements

In addition to the general requirements of the Graduate School,

MPhil in Anthropology

Applicants should have majored in anthropology or related fields.

PhD in Anthropology

Applicants should possess a master's degree in anthropology from CUHK or other recognized universities. Applicants with a background in fields other than anthropology may be considered for conditional admission.

Additional Application Information

Applicants are required to furnish proof of their research capability by submitting academic references, transcripts, samples of writings or publications such as thesis or project reports, and a statement of purpose (2-3 pages) describing why the applicant wants to study anthropology at CUHK and what research project the applicant proposes to carry out. If relevant for research, some evidence of Chinese proficiency is also required for non-native speakers.

The Department of Anthropology and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, invites graduate students in Asia and elsewhere to present their current research at the Postgraduate Student Forum. As Asia continues to become a major actor on the world stage, we hope to explore the vast range of diversity in cultures and languages that are represented by over 4.3 billion people in a land mass that covers almost 1/3 of the earth’s land surface.

Hong Kong is a global city, a major node for trade, investment, and the exchange of ideas. This year, the Postgraduate Student Forum seeks to expand our invitation to graduate students all over the globe, so we are providing a limited amount of scholarships worth up to $2,000 HKD for a select number of abstracts chosen. We hope to encourage communication among local and global young anthropologists and other social scientists to help improve their research and to promote Asian Anthropology internationally.

Call for Papers: Oxford Migration Studies Society 1st Annual Conference

Our Alumni Ka-kin Cheuk, now a PhD candidate in Anthropology at the University of Oxford and chair the Oxford Migration Studies Society, is organizing the society’s inaugural graduate student conference in migration studies. The theme of the conference is “Migration: Theory and Practices.” It aims to create a cross-disciplinary platform for academics and practitioners, as well as graduate students and senior scholars, to exchange views on cutting-edge migration-related topics. The Society welcomes papers about migration in any region of the world, and from all disciplines that use various methodologies.

The Oxford Migration Studies Society Conference

The Oxford Migration Studies Society 1st Annual Conference to be held Saturday, 4 May 2013, provides an interdisciplinary forum that hopes to connect scholars and practitioners with an interest in migration from around the world. This year’s conference, themed ‘Theory and Practice’, will explore different approaches to understanding migration as a fundamental part of today’s world, highlight the way practice can inform theory, and discuss how academic theory can be used in real-world situations to understand the importance of migration for all involved. The Society welcomes papers from all disciplines and practitioners around the world and papers can focus on the migration experience from the state’s perspective, the migrant’s perspective, the migration industry’s perspective in sending and receiving countries as well as on the journey. The Society encourages the submission of papers about migration in any region in the world and which use various methodologies.

Submission abstracts are due on Saturday, 9 February 2013. Full papers will be due Sunday, 31 March 2013. Please send all submissions to Oxford Migration Studies Society at oxford.mss@gmail.com. Include in the subject heading: Conference Submission – your name – title of your paper. Please note that the word limit for abstract is 200 words.
Accepted presenters will be put in contact with distinguished professors from Oxford International Migration Institute (IMI), Center for Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS), and the Refugee Studies Center (RSC) for feedback and comments on their submissions.

PhD Programme

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The goals of the Ph.D. programme are (1) to teach students the latest theories and methods of anthropology, covering the full range of areas addressed by social and cultural anthropology in the past and at present, and (2) to provide students with the anthropological training and guidance to carry out their own extended ethnographic research projects from start (proposal), to fieldwork and write-up, to finish (publication). MA Postgraduate Programme

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The goal of the programme is to teach students the basic theories and methods of social and cultural anthropology and to give them a broad understanding of anthropology's different topics. Students will learn to develop their abilities of critical, independent and creative thinking in analyzing contemporary social and political issues, and understanding the diversity of human cultures and societies.

A key feature and major advantage of the Programme is that students are able to take courses that fit their background and interest. For example, foreign students can concentrate on Chinese society and culture, while students working in museums can concentrate on the anthropology of tourism, museums, archaeology, and other areas relevant to their work.

WHO SHOULD APPLY
The M.A. Programme is designed for people who have not majored in anthropology but wish to receive a formal education in the discipline. Work experience is desirable, so that students can better relate coursework to their profession. Candidates with a strong background in social sciences may wish to concentrate on one of the Department's specializations such as the Anthropology of East Asia or Ethnicity and Identity.

For September 2013 admission, application deadline: 31 March 2013.
For January 2014 admission, application deadline: 30 September 2013.

Board games are a cultural trait that can be used to trace trade routes and cultural contact. Recent results from fieldwork and collections research show that most board games change little when they are introduced across cultural and linguistic boundaries. Archaeological records confirm that this was also true in antiquity and that board games remained the same for hundreds of years. This lecture includes a discussion of these results and a look at the implications for future research.
