[Event] Orientation Day for Undergraduate Admissions 2015

The CUHK Orientation Day for Undergraduate Admissions 2015 was successfully held on 24^th October. The Orientation Day is an annual event, serving as a good opportunity for secondary school students, teachers and parents to know more about CUHK and the undergraduate programmes it offers.

During the Orientation Day, students of the department helped to introduce anthropology and explain our programme requirements to secondary school students and other visitors. Prof. Gordon Mathews, Prof. Teresa Kuan, Prof. Sealing Cheng, and Prof. Sharon Wong also helped to deliver admission talks to visitors in English and Cantonese respectively.

In addition to the information booth and admission talks, we had also set up an exhibition of ethnic clothing in Room 205 of Esther Lee Building. Our department was also opened for students’ visit, with teachers’ publications and thematic ethnographic collections being displayed.

This year, Prof. Sharon Wong and Prof. Wengcheong Lam, together with our postgraduate and undergraduate students, also organized an archaeology demonstration session at the Archaeology Lab in Tsang Shiu Tim Building.

Thanks to the efforts of our teachers and students, this year’s Orientation Day was a great success! Hopefully, the secondary school students could know more about anthropology and our undergraduate programme after the event.

Here is some brief application information of the MA programmes of the Department of Anthropology at CUHK. For more details please visit the Department's homepage. 

Programme Overview
The goal of the programme is to teach students the basic theories and methods of social and cultural anthropology and to give them a broad understanding of anthropology's different topics. Students will learn to develop their abilities of critical, independent and creative thinking in analyzing contemporary social and political issues, and understanding the diversity of human cultures and societies. 
A key feature and major advantage of the Programme is that students are able to take courses that fit their background and interest. For example, foreign students can concentrate on Chinese society and culture, while students working in museums can concentrate on the anthropology of tourism, museums, archaeology, and other areas relevant to their work.

Who Should Apply
The M.A. Programme is designed for people who have or have not majored in anthropology but wish to receive a formal education in the discipline. Work experience is desirable which allows students to relate coursework to their profession. Candidates with a strong background in social sciences may wish to concentrate on one of the Department's specializations such as the Anthropology of East Asia or Ethnicity and Identity.

Programme

MPhil in Anthropology

It normally takes two years (full-time) to complete 28 units. Students must also pass a General Anthropology Examination based on a department reading list.

PhD in Anthropology

The programme is research-oriented. A student may be asked to take additional courses or tutorials, and will be required to present an annual written progress report to his/her supervisor. After passing Qualifying Exams, the student advances to PhD Candidate. Within six months of candidature, the PhD Candidate must submit a Research Proposal for a project requiring nine to twelve months of fieldwork. On return from fieldwork, the student will prepare a thesis based on fieldwork research.

Fields of Specialization

The Division focuses geographically on Chinese culture and society (especially South China) and on East and Southeast Asian Studies. Research topics include nationalism, ethnicity, religion, gender, development and social change, urban and youth cultures, heritage management, archaeology and museology.

Admission Requirements

In addition to the general requirements of the Graduate School,

Applicants should have majored in anthropology or related fields.

PhD in Anthropology

Applicants should possess a master's degree in anthropology from CUHK or other recognized universities. Applicants with a background in fields other than anthropology may be considered for conditional admission.

Applicants are required to furnish proof of their research capability by submitting academic references, transcripts, samples of writings or publications such as thesis or project reports, and a statement of purpose (2-3 pages) describing why the applicant wants to study anthropology at CUHK and what research project the applicant proposes to carry out. If relevant for research, some evidence of Chinese proficiency is also required for non-native speakers.

[Event] Academic Planning Day 2015

The Academic Planning Day for Secondary Five students was successfully held on 28^th March 2015. This year, a lot of students had demonstrated interest in the subject and attended our programme talk.

Prof. Teresa Kuan started the briefing session with an article written by Marc Brightman ─ “Anthropology is so important, all childrenshould learn it”. She continued by introducing the major study areas of Anthropology and the distinctive differences between Anthropology and Cultural Studies. Undergraduates and graduates of our Department also shared their experience of doing fieldwork with the students.

Students then had chance to visit our department exhibitions on teachers’ publications and ethnological collections to have a better overview of our programme. Some students also took the opportunity to ask our undergraduates and graduates questions about Anthropology.

It is encouraging when some students expressed very strong interest in studying the subject. Anthropology is important because it helps us to understand, respect and sustain the different ways of being in the physical world. As Brightman writes, “Moves to downgrade it [Anthropology] in the education system by those who know the price of everything, and the value of nothing, must be fought off.”

Prof. Tracey Lu had once joked in one of her lectures, “Anthropologists are also minorities in Hong Kong.” But culture is dynamic and subject to change. So keep explaining to your friends and children what anthropology is and why it is important. Maybe ten years later the number of people asking “What is anthropology?” could be halved! ;-)

[Event] Orientation Day for Undergraduate Admissions 2014

On 18 October 2014, the "Orientation Day for Undergraduate Admissions" was held on the campus of The Chinese University of Hong Kong(CUHK). 

The CUHK Orientation Day for Undergraduate Admissions has been held every year, serving as a good opportunity for secondary school students, teachers and parents to obtain useful information about CUHK and its undergraduate programmes. 

Professors and students of the Department all helped in the Orientation Day for introducing the anthropology programme and answering questions from the visitors.

Academic Counseling Session for the Undergraduate freshmen 2014

The UG student society members were welcoming the freshmen.

The Academic Counseling Session for the Undergraduate freshmen 2014 was held on August 14, 2014 at LSK 301.  Many practical and useful information is shared within the Session, including Exchange Programme, Academic Advice, Chinese University Student Information System (CUSIS) and the Orientation Camp 2014.  Hopefully, the freshmen could have a glimpse of the fruitful university life in CUHK after the session.

Heidi, Colleague from OAL, was introducing the exchange programmes in CUHK.
