[News] Dr. Bosco's Article Wins Award at Hong Kong Studies Conference

An article published by Prof. Joseph Bosco in 2016, when he was teaching in the department, has been selected as one of the six outstanding papers in Hong Kong Studies for 2015/2016. The six papers were selected from 186 articles in Hong Kong Studies published in the previous year, and were presented at the first Hong Kong Studies Annual Conference sponsored by the Academy of Hong Kong Studies of the Education University of Hong Kong last week, on January 20th. [Publication] Wishing Well: Voices from Foreign Domestic Workers in Hong Kong and Beyond

The book Wishing Well: Voices from Foreign Domestic Workers in Hong Kong and Beyond, co-edited by Dr. Ju-chen Chen and Min Lee, is now available online.

Wishing Well is a collection of poems, essays and fiction written by migrant domestic workers. Published by HelperChoice, it is an open access book free for everyone to read.

Dr. Chen hopes that the book can help to convey the voices of foreign domestic workers to the mainstream society, so that non-domestic-worker readers can get to know more about the worlds of the domestic workers.

[In the Press] Enriching our Education with Anthropology

Prof. Gordon Mathews together with two students and an alumna of our department have been featured in the article "Enriching our Education with Anthropology" on the website of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. They talk about how anthropology shows the complexity of culture, and how it provides them a holistic perspective in viewing things and the surrounding environment.

'The role of anthropology is to show the complexity of culture; culture interweaves with biology, environment, economics, religion, political structures and so on.’ Commenting on the characteristics of anthropology, Professor Mathews stressed the pivotal role played by ethnography and participant observation, a research method commonly employed by anthropologists and ethnographers.'

'Anthropology provides a vehicle for examining the many facets of life, which range from gender, religion, language, politics, economics, food, medicine, and material culture to rituals and symbols. For that reason, anthropology has much to offer to a broad education.'

The book, written in Chinese with English translation, retells the observations and experiences of anthropologists (many of which are our teachers/students) doing fieldwork in China. [Publication] The Social Life of American Crayfish in Asia (Book Chapter)

Re-orienting cuisine: East Asian foodways in the twenty-first century

Professor Sidney Cheung’s article, entitled “The Social Life of American Crayfish in Asia”, has been published as a chapter of the book Re-orienting cuisine: East Asian foodways in the twenty-first century, edited by Kwang Ok Kim:

“Sidney Cheung (chapter 12) shows how crayfish harvested in the United States were imported into China via Japan and have been reinvented and transformed into a new local specialty food of the Nanjing area, now serving as a critical source of income for the local residents. What is particularly emphasized in this process is the fact that the reinvention of crayfish into an economically profitable crop in the fish farms of Nanjing and its restaurants involves serious ecological destruction, but such consequences do not draw the slightest attention of the local authorities, the farmers, and the consumers” (Kim 2015: 8).

Love’s Uncertainty explores the hopes and anxieties of urban, middle-class parents in contemporary China. Combining long-term ethnographic research with analyses of popular child-rearing manuals, television dramas, and government documents, Teresa Kuan bears witness to the dilemmas of ordinary Chinese parents, who struggle to reconcile new definitions of good parenting with the reality of limited resources. Situating these parents’ experiences in the historical context of state efforts to improve "population quality," Love’s Uncertainty reveals how global transformations are expressed in the most intimate of human experiences. Abstract:

By the end of 2013 Hong Kong’s Muslim population had grown to over 270,000. It has become increasingly evident that large numbers of Muslims live and work in Hong Kong and in many ways the city is a hospitable place for them. Islam in Hong Kong has for a long time been overlooked and little understood by the Hong Kong Chinese majority. However, the situation is changing. The conference on Islamic Civilizations in Multiple Perspectives held on 13 September 2013 at the Chinese University of Hong Kong highlighted the growing interest and recognition of Islam in Hong Kong. This paper surveys the history of Muslims in Hong Kong and provides an overview of recent and emerging research on Islam in the territory. It highlights an array of issues pertinent to Muslims in Hong Kong such as mosque development, education, pilgrimage, food, and media representations. It concludes by addressing the position of Islam in Hong Kong and the question of who speaks for and represents Muslim communities in Hong Kong.

[Publication] Rethinking Asian Food Heritage

Foodways is an important cultural marker of identity in many globalizing Asian societies, and provides insight to not only social changes, cultural nationalism, and traditional values, but also cultural inheritance in the context of political economy. Edited by Professor Sidney C. H. Cheung, this book collects selected and revised papers from the international conference “Foodways and Heritage: A Perspective of Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage”. The thirteen chapters in this book provide rich ethnographic description and analysis on food as a kind of intangible cultural heritage as it interacts with social and political complexities in Asia’s diverse cultures.

傳統飲食文化不單為很多正值全球化發展的亞洲社會提供了文化身份認同的解讀，更牽涉到社會變遷、文化民族主義、傳統價值以及政治經濟下的文化傳承等議題。此論文選集由本系教授張展鴻編纂，收錄了於「傳統飲食文化與非物質文化遺產保護國際研討會」所發表的其中十三篇論文，以非物質文化遺產的角度及民族志的研究和分析方法去探討傳統飲食文化。

與考古學的一些事情 – 訪黃慧怡教授

黃慧怡教授於新加坡國立大學東南亞研究系修讀東南亞考古及文化，並取得博士學位，論文題目是「從九至十四世紀中國與高棉陶瓷業研究」，主要探討歷史時期中國與東南亞之間的文化交流。黃教授在本學年加入本系，主要任教考古學、博物館學及東南亞文化課程。

對考古學產生興趣

黃教授對考古學的興趣是源於大學時期的一門選修課。本身修讀社會學的黃教授在其中一門選修課的安排下，有幸到香港其中一個重要的考古遺址考察。從沒想過香港也有考古的黃教授，被眼前的考古遺址深深震撼，亦引起她對考古學的興趣。黃教授畢業後從事香港考古相關工作，並有機會在以色列加利利海參與希伯來大學的考古發掘，不久就到北京大學考古文博學院接受考古訓練。

北大考古文博學院內有數百位研習考古學及博物館學的師生，黃教授認為在此浸淫三年所獲的考古訓練，對她的學術發展有深遠的影響。北大主修考古學的學生在畢業前，必須跟隨老師到中國的考古遺址，完成為期半年的田野考古實習。由於在報告完成之前，學生不可離開實習地點，黃教授就在陝西渡過半年充實的實習生活。

在陝西考古發掘

如同其他考古發掘，這次陝西田野考古實習亦包括了田野調查、發掘、整理出土器物及完成報告四部份，期間，師生與當地考古單位及村民一起工作，同時又可瞭解當地的文化習俗，如陝西的飲食文化及喪禮儀式等。實習以外，老師亦安排同學參觀當地重要的考古遺址及博物館，包括寶雞青銅器博物院、西周扶風宮殿遺址、秦兵馬俑、漢陽陵和唐法門寺博物館等，令他們眼界大開。由於當時正值寒冬，加上考古遺址位處鄉郊地區，缺乏熱水淋浴設備，師生只能一個月到大城市洗澡一次。然而，對熱愛考古的黃教授而言，這些生活上一些不便只是另一個難忘的回憶。

為何研究東南亞

黃教授在北大集中於唐宋時期廣東地區陶瓷考古研究，當中主要研究銷售海內外的廣東陶瓷器。當時的指導老師建議她可由海上絲綢之路入手，研究泰國或其他東南亞國家出土的陶瓷器。

黃教授於柬埔寨吳哥地區

北大畢業後，黃教授到香港城市大學擔任研究助理，參與柬埔寨吳哥出土中國陶瓷器的研究。在城大的研討會上，黃教授遇上來自新加坡國立大學的教授，他正以東南亞的角度研究於東南亞出土的中國陶瓷器，黃教授認為此研究進路可拓寬她對廣東陶瓷研究的思路，遂報考新加坡國立大學東南亞研究系博士課程，並以高棉陶瓷為切入點,探討南中國與東南亞之間的跨文化及跨地域交流。

正在進行的研究計劃

教學以外，黃教授現時主要進行三個研究計劃。第一個是延續黃教授的博士研究「九至十四世紀中國與高棉陶瓷業研究」，從出土陶瓷器研究南中國與東南亞的關係。有關研究早在十九世紀晚期開始，現時位於柬埔寨吳哥一帶的考古工作仍然持續，黃教授或於明年參與下一輪的發掘工作，以獲取新的考古資料，建立理論框架（參考黃教授早前研討會回顧）。

黃教授亦正在進行大嶼山竹篙灣遺址的東南亞考古證據研究，希望擴展我們對十四至十六世紀香港之國際貿易網絡的認識。此外，黃教授亦剛獲得衛奕信勳爵文物信託基金的資助研究香港非物質文化遺產—傳統陶瓷工藝，將會到廣州參與會議、進行深度訪談、文獻資料搜集及分析，以紀錄及保存20世紀20年代至今的香港傳統陶瓷工藝。

寄語

談及本系同學，已任教一個學期的黃教授認為同學普遍擁有良好的語言、組織能力，具有理想抱負、人文精神及國際視野。自黃教授修讀考古學時起，一直聽到「主流」論述質疑修讀人類學、考古學及博物館學等學科的畢業生，在畢業後難以尋找相關工作，不少畢業生因而轉投其他行業，黃教授為此感到可惜。她以考古學為例，指出學科知識可運用於不同相關工種，如博物館、教學、研究、環評工作、文化遺產管理、文化旅遊及地區公眾教育等，最近的沙中線宋元遺址風波，就反映香港特別在研究及公眾教育等方面缺乏考古專才。

她亦認為現時職場及學術界都往跨地域及跨學科的方向發展，人類學等學科知識正正培養同學掌握文化差異性及多角度思考。因此，黃教授建議同學可視外界的質疑為梳理自身想法的機會，並多關注自己的目標，利用學科知識清晰地規劃將來的路向。

[Publication] 香港濕地四季遊 Wetland Tourism in Four Seasons: Perspectives from landscape, foodways and community lifestyles

繼《上環印記》後，由本系張展鴻教授撰寫，系友駱吉婷（12/哲學碩士）、梁名漢（14/本科）作資料整理的新書《香港濕地四季遊》已於2014年8月份出版，售價為港幣58元。

書後簡介：香港新界東北有綠土，西北則有大大小小的海岸濕地和魚塘。香港西北海岸濕地因為近二十年來本地淡水漁業的衰退，導致傳統行業和生態環境面臨前所未有的威脅。《香港濕地四季遊》是繼《上環印記》之後，另一個由香港中文大學支持的「知識轉移項目」的成果，旨在加強大眾對香港獨待的濕地資源的認識，以四季自然為基礎，通過生態旅遊為學習手段，鼓勵大家走進新界西北，探索該地的自然環境與人文風情。

Professor Sidney C. H. Cheung's new book “Wetland Tourism in Four Seasons: Perspectives from landscape, foodways and community lifestyles” is published in August, 2014.  The data in the book were complied by our alumni Erin Luo (M.Phil. '12) and Leung Ming Hon (B.A. '14).  The book's suggested price is HKD 58.

Similar to "Sheung Wan", this book is also based on a Knowledge Transfer Project supported by the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The book records the knowledge generated by various groups/stakeholders (farmers, bird watchers, conservation groups, etc.) of the Inner Deep Bay and the neighboring areas (like Yuen Long, Tai San Wai, etc.), and presents to the readers through an integrated design of ecotourism package from a multi-disciplinary perspective. 

The book aims at drawing the public’s attentions at coastal development through creating four seasonal models of wetland tourism package. The emphasis on seasonal change in the area is not only serving the purpose of attracting people for multiple visits but also enhancing the appreciation of life cycle both in nature and local rural communities.

Professor Gordon Mathews shared his thought on the Occupy Central movement on facebook earlier this week.  It not only sparked heated discussion, but also drew the medias' attention.

"I am deeply upset about the Chinese government's decision to deny democracy to Hong Kong, and just wrote this to Benny Tai: "Some of us who are not Chinese are very willing to engage in Occupy Central. However, we are worried that, as foreigners, and particularly as Americans, we will be playing into the Mainland's propaganda. We don't want to be involved if we would hurt the Occupy Central movement. What do you think we should do? Benny, feel free to respond privately if it seems more appropriate, if you can find time to do so-- " I'll see what he says! What do any HK or Chinese readers of this think? Would an American getting arrested help or hurt the Hong Kong democracy cause in the eyes of the Mainland? 

If CUHK classes are shut down at the end of September, I will support the student protesters--I will film all my classes and put them on-line, and make sure that no one who is arrested and jailed will academically suffer for it, although I will also do all I can to offer my class for those who want to attend, and who aren't participating in the boycott: this is strictly a matter of free, individual choice, all the more, of course, for the many students who are not from Hong Kong. But I am still unsure as to what to do myself..."

After five years of service, Professor Sidney Cheung has completed his term as the Department Chairperson .  Professor Gordon Mathews is appointed the new Chairperson with effect from August 1, 2014.

 The new Chairperson, Professor Mathews, has written some words for all the readers:

As the new chairperson, I hope to follow the legacy of Prof. Tan and Prof. Cheung, in striving to make the Department's teaching and research even better than it already is.  At the same time, however, I'll work to make sure that the Dept. never loses its sense of intimacy, so that it can continue to feel like a family.  That's of extraordinary importance. 

This fall, Prof. Tracey Lu is on leave, and a new teacher, Prof. Sharon Wong, is teaching archaeology courses.  We all hope and pray that Tracey will return to teach in the future, but meanwhile, we trust that Sharon will offer some lively classes for students.

If you are a student, we hope that you are looking forward to the new school year beginning in September.  If you are an alumnus, stop by the Dept. sometime, and say hello to us all.  It's your Department too!  For anyone reading this, please come to our Friday Seminars most Fridays at 12:30.  The schedule will soon be on the web: we welcome your presence.

In the Press: Cross-Border Mothers Lost In Two Social Systems

Dr, Wai-chi Chee, Lecturer in our department, has researched on Cross-Border Mothers, which aims to analyse the conflict between Hong Kong and Mainland China from the Cross-Border Mothers' perspective. The research was recently reported in two articles.

“…徐渭芝採訪了大概40個阿寶這樣的跨境媽媽。她的報告 說，很多跨境母親都後悔來港生子，甚至還想一死了之。徐渭芝說香港政府當初為了刺激經濟而鼓勵內地孕婦來港生子的時候，並沒有預想到今天的情況，這是行政失當。在報告中還提到一個母親說：“有時候我的兒子很吵，吵到了收留我們的親戚。我當然會跟兒子說，可他只有三歲，什麼都不懂。我打他，他反而哭得更厲害。有一次他哭鬧不斷，我就瘋了…”

“Cross-Border Mothers Lost In Two Social Systems” Shako Liu

“…Chee interviewed about 40 cross-border families in her study. Regret is prominent among them, many even have a death wish. The ambiguity of the One-Child Policy falls into interpretation of local governments. Some women she interviewed said they also paid a fine to the local government for having a second child in Hong Kong. Chee said the Hong Kong government didn’t envision the problems when they opened the door for the women to give birth in Hong Kong as a way to boost the economy after SARS in 2003. 

In Chee’s report, one of the mothers said, “Sometimes my son makes noise. The relatives whom we are staying with are annoyed. I talk to my son but he is too young to understand. He is only three. I hit him and he cries even louder. Once I went totally crazy as he cried and cried. To make him stop crying…”
