[Event] Cambodia Summer Field Trip 2017 Exhibition


Touching Angkor: From Temples to Cities, Archaeology and Cultural Heritage in Cambodia

This summer, the anthropology department from The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) established the first credit-bearing course that included fieldwork in archaeology and cultural heritage studies in Cambodia. With our students from CUHK and graduates from The Royal University of Fine Arts (RUFA), Phnom Penh, we travelled to the capital Phnom Penh then to Angkor, Siem Reap in June. To share the result of our research, we have organized an exhibition at Hui Gallery, New Asia College, CUHK, 16-27, October, co-organized with APSARA Authority, Siem Reap and Faculty of Archaeology, RUFA, Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

We visited a piece of history left by the Khmer Rouge through the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum that was listed under “the Memory of the World” in 2009; we examined the archaeological sites of Angkor, which the UNESCO inscribed as “World Heritage” in 1992. The class was divided into five groups that conquered the academic areas of museum anthropology, archaeology, ceramic studies, intangible cultural heritage and peoples and cultures of Cambodia. We will unravel some new and interesting cross-cultural interpretations of archaeology and cultural heritage studies in Cambodia in this exhibition.

[Announcement] Summer Field Trip to Cambodia (2-13 June,2017)


Summer Field Trip to Cambodia (2-13 June,2017) for major in anthropology, minor in anthropology, archaeology and cultural heritage studies undergraduate students




This year, Professor Sharon Wong will lead a 12-day field trip to Cambodia. This will be the first credit-bearing summer course – ANTH3321 Topics in Anthropology from Department of Anthropology. The main theme of the trip will be “the Meanings of Cultural Heritage and Archaeological Sites to “Insiders” and “Outsiders””. At the core of the trip, students are required to participate in two-day workshop on interactive lecture and discussion on digital heritage and intangible cultural heritage studies in Cambodia, and hands-on sessions on archaeological artifacts (in collaboration with School of Archaeology, Royal University of Fine Arts, National Museum of Cambodia, Phnom Penh, Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S-21), APSARA Authority, Angkor, University of Sydney, and Centre for Khmer Studies, Siem Reap etc.)

Fee: HK$4800 for the trip (Department will sponsor up to half of the summer field trip, you can also still apply for subsidy from the NA College Office)

Some of the expected outcomes of the field trip are:

  • Understand the cultural heritage studies, archaeology, museum anthropology and people and cultures in Southeast Asia in concrete experience;
  • Study the various interpretations of “Memory of the World”—case study on the memory of Khmer Rouge and “World Heritage”—case study of Angkor
  • Connect cultural dynamics with local and international researchers/students in Cambodia –study the meanings of cultural heritage and archaeological sites to ‘insiders’ and ‘outsiders’;
  • Know how to collect data and prepare a mini research report on a case study of cultural heritage/archaeological site or museum;
  • Learn to communicate with local people in ways other than students’ spoken language;
  • Use inter-disciplinary approaches and critical thinking in discussing heritage issues
  • Program of the trip tentatively includes:
  • Conducting participant observations, interviews and group research projects in 1-2 cultural heritage/archaeological site(s) or museum(s);
  • Visit the major temples of Angkor National Park and some archaeological sites;
  • Meeting with researchers and students in local and international Institutions;
  • Meeting with archaeologists and anthropologists working in Angkor-World Heritage Site in Southeast Asia;
  • Daily briefing sessions and workshops

Difficulties:

Students should be prepared for some challenges, and mentally make a commitment not to complain since the fieldwork is going to be short;

  • It will be very hot; not all sites and institutions will have AC, the average high 35-40C, it may have heavy rain.
  • Language: all local people speak Khmer, some of the local students and researchers can speak fairly good English, Mandarin and/or French;
  • Food: some meals may be very simple especially near the archaeological sites; we will try to go out occasionally to eat in restaurants;
  • Students will be stay in pairs or with local Khmer students. Exact arrangements to be arranged, and depend on the male/female breakdown.
  • Hard work: students should expect to spend many hours writing field notes and studying archaeological artifacts, and participant observations in some field sites. After the field trip, students will use their findings to curate a summer field trip exhibition at Hui Gallery, CUHK (Oct, 2017)

[Announcement] Summer Field Trip to Seoul, South Korea (14–22 July,2015)


Summer Field Trip to Seoul, South Korea (14–22 July,2015)

This year, Professor Sealing Cheng will lead a 9-day field trip to South Korea. The main theme of the trip will be “Gender and Social Justice.” At the core of the trip, students are required to participate in the activities of Magdalena House Collective, an NGO for sex workers that will be celebrating its 30th anniversary. They will also meet with activists and researchers who work on gender and sexuality issues. 

Some of the expected outcomes of the field trip are:
  • For those who find sex work a difficult subject to think about, this will be a good chance for you to get to know sex workers as human beings, rather than a symbol;
  • To examine how gender and sexuality are contested issues in South Korea;
  • To connect everyday experience with broader structural and cultural dynamics;
  • To experience a taste of “making the strange familiar”;
  • Learning to communicate in ways other than the spoken language (unless you speak passable Korean, and you are encouraged to take some intensive language classes before the trip). 

Program of the trip tentatively includes:
  • Helping with the preparation of the 30th Anniversary of Magdalena House Collective (all sorts of task, including a short performance);
  • Visit to sex work areas, including Itaewon;
  • Meeting with researchers on sex work issues;
  • Meeting with activists working on issues of sexuality;
  • Meeting with Korean anthropologists;
  • Visit to War Memorial Museum;
  • Daily briefing sessions.

Event: Exhibition of the Summer Field Trip to Doulan and Chihshang in Taitung, Taiwan




As mentioned in the earlier blogpost, the students who joined the department summer field trip this year demonstrated their learning outcomes by setting up an exhibition in October. The exhibition involved a holistic point of view of the culture and society of Taitung, including the perspectives of agriculture, landscape and aborigines. It was also hoped to reflect the impacts brought by economic development, urbanization and natural environment to the cultural group.

The exhibition explores various aspects of Doulan and Chihshang in Taitung, including the indigenous Ami people's identity and social organisation, the tourism industry, hand craft, foodway, nature, colonial relationship, agricultural product and demarcation of ethnic groups.

The Opening Ceremony was held on October 13, 2014. Teachers, postgraduate and undergraduate students were invited to join the ceremony. The ceremony started with the welcoming speech from our department chairmen Prof. Gordon Mathews. After Dr. Ju-chen Chen and student representative Eugene Lee introduced the exhibition and the summer field trip this year, all guests started to watch the exhibition while enjoying the refreshment prepared by the students.

Event: Summer Field Trip to Doulan and Chihshang in Taitung, Taiwan

Every summer, our department organizes a field trip for students to deepen their understanding of anthropology. The fieldsites cover a wide range of countries and cultural backgrounds. This year, Dr. Ju-chen Chen led a trip to Doulan and Chihshang in Taitung, Taiwan. The field trip focused on (1) Organic agriculture and the environment, (2) Aborigines and the tribal culture, and (3) Colonialization culture and the protection, management and manipulation of the natural landscape in Taitung. The students were given an opportunity to visit the tribes and farms, to interact with the stake holders, and to have deeper understanding of how the economic development, urbanization and natural environment influence the culture.

陳如珍博士在五月二十四日至六月六日帶領人類學系本科生到台灣台東縣的都蘭和池上作為期十四天的田野考察,希望可從台東、農業及原住民的角度瞭解台灣文化和社會。

台灣的東岸因為地形的關係,交通的便利性受到限制,在經濟發展與城市化上始終落後於台灣的其他地區。在經濟落後的情況下,農業與自然環境反而受到較佳的保護。近年來,在多元文化與環境保護意識的推動下,有越來越多的人認真反思城市化與經濟發展的困局。在花東一帶,更有許多的人實際上去嘗試不同的「發展」思維。


這次田野考察主要探討三個主題:「有機農業與環境」、「原住民與部落文化」及「殖民文化與自然地景的保護,管理和利用」。通過拜訪都蘭和池上不同的村落、農場、社會運動參與者、一般居民、台東大學公共人類學課程的師生、不同的政府單位、非政府組織及基金會,同學瞭解各利益持份者的角色與參與,得以反思經濟發展、城市化與自然環境對文化的影響。

在完成考察後,同學把蒐集的資料及調查結果整理成報告,並在十月舉辦了成果展。以下內容節錄自成果展小冊子:

有機農業與環境
台東都蘭和池上在農業發展上各有方向。在是次考察中,我們進入了社區與他們的農民、企業家、文化人和政策決定者接觸了解他們的農業文化。展覽會介紹都蘭農業發展的歷史脈絡、面對的局限、銷售模式和部落關係等;從而探討當地族群與農業的關係和連繫。而池上居民以農業為主,故池上米的認證制度、監管、契作模式等都與當地社區的生活、文化和身份認同息息相關。是次展覽會以此為中心,思考農業和環境對社群的意義和影響。

原住民與部落文化
台東的都蘭是阿美族的原居部落之一。由於日本殖民的歷史因素和閩南客家族群的擠壓,原住民的文化、生計和身份長期受到挑戰。近年來,在多元文化思考論述以及返鄉阿美(及他族)文化工作者的影響下,族人開始積極重建部落的身份和認同。是次考察進入都蘭部落的社區,了解他們的社會組織、經濟模式、身份認同、對旅遊業的取態及因此所面臨的挑戰。

殖民文化與自然地景的保護、管理和利用
在台東,不論是在都蘭或是池上,不同社群中都存在著「殖民文化」,包括歷史上的日本殖民、城市對鄉郊的殖民和權力階級的殖民等。這些因素影響著社群對古蹟活化、自然地景的使用和保護、經濟、旅遊、社區等發展的選擇。這次考察的範圍涵蓋了都蘭的民宿、農田作物的選擇和池上伯朗大道附近的地景利用,從中探討權力的分配與使用在經濟發展的考量下如何影響社群的選擇。

[Event] Summer Field Trip 2014 Exhibition: Ngay’ay Ho Taitung

Our students have participated the fieldtrip to Doulan and Chihshang, Taitung last summer. To share the result of their research, we have organized an exhibition at Hui Gallery, New Asia College, CUHK, 13-24 October. 

Doulan and Taitung are popular places for tourists. In the two places, there are different voices of how the place, or community should be developed. We hope that through looking the agricultural development, ethnic relations and colonial legacy of the two place as examples, the exhibition can offer some insights on forms of development of identity and community, which may be different from those in Hong Kong.

[Event] Field Study Tour Exhibition 2013: Inheritors

Based on the Spring Field Trip led by Prof. Sidney Cheung in Nagoya, Japan, students of Anthropology Department further conducted their research this summer on the subject of "Inheritors", to explore the preservation and transmission of traditional culture in Hong Kong. 
This exhibition displays their Summer Field Study, which covers 19 different projects vary from food to traditional art and handicrafts. All interested are welcome!

本期名為『知識傳承』的展覽即是對人類學系本科同學2013年度春季和暑期田野考察的總結及成果展示。展覽涉及的主題十分豐富,從涼茶舖到手打魚蛋,從粵劇到傳統花牌,從面線師到東陽木雕等等,遍及飲食、傳統藝術和手工藝等19個主題。歡迎感興趣的同學前來參觀!

Event: Summer Field Trip to Turkey


Every summer, our department organizes a field trip for students to deepen their understanding of anthropology. The fieldsites cover a wide range of countries and cultural backgrounds. This year, Prof. HUANG Yu led a trip to Turkey. Besides famous sites and historical heritage, the group also visited charity organizations, schools, TV stations and residences where students had the opportunities to discuss with local people. This trip was supported by the Turkish cultural association Anatolia Culture and Dialogue Centre, which co-organized the "Turkish Night" with our department in January this year.

人類學系師生考察團到訪土耳其

五月二十七日至六月三日,人類學系的四名碩士生和八名本科生,連同黃瑜教授到土耳其作為期八天的文化考察,期間到訪土耳其西部包括伊茲密爾(Izmir)、布爾薩(Bursa)和伊斯坦堡在內的三座城市。本次行程主要由安納托利亞文化與交流中心 (Anatolia Culture and Dialogue Centre) 負責安排,行程中除遊覽部分歷史古蹟外,考察團更受邀到當地民居、學校、慈善機構、大眾傳媒機構等進行參觀訪問。

在愛琴海岸的歷史名城伊茲密爾,考察團主要參觀位於市郊的以弗所古城遺址以及市中心著名的鄂圖曼鐘樓,當地居民Mustafa先生除熱情擔任了考察團的一日導遊,更邀請一行人到家中作客,讓師生有機會接觸了解土耳其人日常的家庭生活面貌。

而在因眾多公園、花圃而得名“綠色布爾薩”的布爾薩,除觀看伊斯蘭的蘇非派旋轉舞蹈儀式(Sufi Dance),參觀鄂圖曼村落布爾薩大清真寺外,考察團亦有機會在當地人家體驗特色家庭早餐,了解土耳其餐桌上不同食品飲料背後包含的風俗習慣。

作為土耳其最大城市,橫跨歐亞大陸、擁有豐厚文化歷史的伊斯坦堡則向考察團展現了其多元的面貌。在伊斯坦堡逗留的四天,考察團參觀的各個歷史地標包括建於六世紀的聖索菲亞教堂(Hagia Sophia)、鄂圖曼帝國興盛時期建造的托卡比皇宮(Topkapi Palace)、擁有高超聲學設計的蘇萊曼尼耶清真寺(Süleymaniye Mosque)等等,當然還有今時今日作為伊斯坦堡旅遊熱點之一、擁有逾五百年歷史的大市集 (Grand Bazaar)。然而這些名勝顯然無法概括考察團的所見所聞:博斯普魯斯海峽的游船、各色風味餐廳、夜晚市中心街道上敲著鍋碗瓢盆和舉著土耳其國旗遊行表達訴求的民眾,無一不在展示伊斯坦堡歷史感與現代感兼備的活力。


此行中亦有不少讓同學留下深刻印象的片段,例如與當地居民用膳交談間不時出現新奇有趣的題目。比如他們對考察團一行人長相與實際年齡的差距感到好奇,玩笑似地問同學們如何保持容貌青春;同時他們也對土耳其與中國貿易往來、中國大學生的就業情況等等方面向教授和同學提問,同學們亦盡所能解答這些疑問。

八天行程雖然比較倉促,但豐富的行程讓同學們對這個本來既遙遠又陌生的國家有了更多認識,這些見聞可以說是超越文本,實體化的過程,是從名信片、歷史課本的印象擴展至實地、人與人交流的經歷。同學們還新結識了不少土耳其朋友,並對土耳其的飲食文化有初步接觸,回港後紛紛光顧土耳其餐廳,藉此回味。

安納托利亞文化與交流中心在今年一月亦和人類學系合辦了交流活動「土耳其之夜」。作為非牟利機構,中心希望透過安排包括染紙藝術(Ebru)工作坊、語言及烹飪課程、實地考察等各種活動,促進文化交流,加深外國人對土耳其的認識。

Event: Field Trip- Cultural Inheritors of Japan


In late March, the cherry blossom season, Prof. Sidney Cheung led a group of 20 students to Nagoya, Japan to learn about the preservation of traditional Japanese culture, in particular, the role of cultural inheritors. Our student Allie Kwong shares her experiences during the trip.



於三月二十九日至四月五日,二十位人類學同學跟隨張展鴻教授到日本名古屋進行田野考察,主題爲文化傳承。旅程中,同學參觀了有四百年歷史的名古屋城和德川博物館,參與了香道的活動及欣賞了日本傳統戲劇狂言,其中香道的示範及狂言最令同學印象深刻。兩個活動皆於香道志野流的家元蜂谷先生家中舉行。在考察前,人類學系曾邀請蜂谷先生來港介紹香道,這次在名古屋,同學更深入地了解香道的歷史和作法。大家在作香道的特別房間一起欣賞香的味道,並互相分享感受。對同學來說,這是一次十分有趣、以嗅覺爲主導的體驗。其後蜂谷先生分享了他作爲這種傳統藝術繼承人的矛盾和創新精神。這次活動中,蜂谷先生也解釋了日本房間的佈局,人與大自然和季節的連繫。狂言對同學亦是嶄新的體驗。當天幾位名古屋大學的同學亦一起參與。狂言師生動有趣的解說令同學十分投入,示範完畢候同學皆覺意猶未盡。

三月尾四月初正是櫻花盛開之時,處處是好風光,同學們紛紛趁自由時間賞櫻!這次考察令同學更了解文化遺產如名古屋城的保育及傳統技藝的傳承,亦對日本加深了認識,獲益良多。同學將於暑假時以傳承人爲題,各自再進行考察。
