Call for participants and volunteers: ICONIC Mums Program!

The Multiculturalism in Action Project (MIA) is launching a new intercultural program called ICONIC Mums Program, aiming at bringing women of different ethnic backgrounds together. The training workshops in July/August will enhance their multicultural knowledge, individual development, and mutual empowerment. Participants will then form groups to plan and implement community-based projects, which will further disseminate appreciation of cultural diversity and will inspire a new round of social innovation among different ethnic communities in Hong Kong.

We are now recruiting participants and volunteers for the program. All are welcome! The online registration form could be accessed here

For enquiries, please contact Ms. Connie Lee at lee-connie@cuhk.edu.hk or 3943 7716.

Programme Exploration Days for JUPAS Applicants 2017

On May 16, 2017, we held an Anthropology Programme Exploration Day for around twenty 2017 JUPAS applicants.

Prof. Sealing Cheng gave a talk on anthropology and introduced some classic questions: What is culture, and what is nature? What is normal, and what is strange?

Prof. Wengcheong Lam introduced the Minor in Archaeology programme, after which, with the assistance of our RA Saichia and postgraduate student Gabriela, students got some hands-on experience in the demonstration session.

Undergraduate student representatives Anson and Claudia also helped to answer questions from students.

Multiculturalism in Action Project was invited to participate in the Hong Kong “Belt & Road” Friendly Basketball Tournament

The Multiculturalism in Action (MIA) Project was invited to take part in the Hong Kong “Belt & Road” Friendly Basketball Tournament organized by the Silk Road Economic Development Research Centre. This Tournament aimed to encourage cultural exchange, and develop a better understanding of cultural diversity along the Belt and Road. There were eight teams competing in total, including the Cambodian, Malaysian, Pakistani, and Russian etc. MIA’s Multicultural Team consisted of Bangladeshi, Chinese, and Sri Lankan members. They played the Nepali Team on 11 April, 2017, at the St. James’ Settlement Multi-Purpose Indoor Basketball Court, Wan Chai.

The Nepali Team won the game, and both teams had a great time as players enjoyed the intercultural interaction and friendship with team members. We believe that sports, which requires team work and mutual trust, is always a good way to enhance intercultural experience and social integration.

The Multiculturalism in Action Project is a knowledge-transfer project launched by Prof. Maria Tam in 2013, aiming at involving different ethnic origins in Hong Kong to make a change together. We believe that cultural knowledge and sensibility are the basis to ending multiple marginalization of ethnic communities. We value: 1) partnership among different ethnic communities; 2) mutual empowerment through intercultural experiences; and 3) sustainability of intercultural education over time. Please visit our website http://arts.cuhk.edu.hk/~ant/knowledge-transfer/multiculturalism-in-action/index.html to learn more about our work, and view our documentary “Intercultural Hong Kong Series: Feeling south Asian” at https://youtu.be/PA5YGEdKuAc

Intercultural Hong Kong Series: Feeling South Asian

In 2013, Prof. Siumi Maria Tam launched the Multiculturalism in Action Project, with an aim to raise awareness of the ethnic and cultural diversity in Hong Kong. Focusing on the South Asian communities (Indian, Nepali, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, and Sri Lankan), some of the most socially marginalized groups in the city, and believing in the power of cultural knowledge and hands-on experience, her group tried to enhance ethnic sensibility through partnership, mutual empowerment, and sustainability.

This short film features cultural practices of the South Asian groups and the challenges they face in religion, education, and healthcare. The film points out the importance of intercultural education if Hong Kong is to live up to its name as a metropolis, and shows that it is both learnable and practicable.

The film can be accessed at https://youtu.be/hoYvNhSJu14.
