Between China and Southeast Asia, Angkor has played a crucial role in regional historical developments during the 9-14th Centuries. The recent archaeological finds in Angkor demonstrated that it was one of the earliest glazed ceramics production centres in Southeast Asia. These findings altered the traditional understanding on Chinese ceramic technology must have been diffused on local ceramic industries. The talk will provide new insights on how the potters in Angkor have attempted to distinguish their products from imported Chinese items or to have absorbed only certain elements from Chinese ceramic technology in order to maintain a separate tradition. The presenter will also discuss the recent Guangzhou archaeological ceramic finds that can be identified as important evidences on how Chinese potters borrowed some stylistic elements from Angkorian ceramics.
