The Centre for Cultural Heritage Studies, Department of Anthropology has invited Prof. Fan Jinshi, Director of the Dunhuang Academy to give us talks on both 21 January and 24 January, on the cultural significance as well as the protection of Dunhuang Mogao Caves.
Professor Fan Jinshi has dedicated her life to the archaeological study and conservation of the Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes for over five decades and has strenthened international cooperation to ensure the preservation of Dunhuang heritage. Details of her talk on 21 Jan 2014 are listed below.

位於中國甘肅省敦煌市的莫高窟，是中國三大石窟寺之一，是中國佛教藝術的杰出代表，在世界文化遺產領域中也享有盛譽，1987年被列入聯合國教科文組織的世界文化遺產名錄。本演講將向聽眾介紹敦煌莫高窟開鑿的历史文化背景，莫高窟營建的簡史、各洞窟的建筑形制、洞窟內的彩塑和壁畫的主要内容和特点，以及莫高窟藏經洞文物的發現、流散和主要内容。最後，本演講將分析敦煌莫高窟和藏經洞文物的文化價值，包括其歷史、藝術、科技和現代文化價值。

Located at Dunhuang City, Gansu Province of the People’s Republic of China, the Mogao Caves are one of the three greatest Buddhism grottos in mainland China, an outstanding example of the Buddhism Arts in the world, and was enlisted as a World Heritage property by United Nations’ Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 1987. This talk will review the construction history of the Mogao Caves, and introduces the architectural styles of caves dug in different periods of time, contents of the paintings and sculptures inside the caves, as well as the discovery, loss and the contents of the artefacts found in the Sutra Cave. Finally, the talk will analyze the cultural significance of the Mogao Caves from historical, scientific, aesthetic and cultural perspectives.
The seminar will be conducted in Putonghua.
